NEW INTERNATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL AT SHARPSTOWN HIGH

Now Accepting Applications

The new International High School at Sharpstown (IHSS) is now enrolling students for its inaugural year beginning August 2007 on the campus of Sharpstown High School (SHS).  This applies to students zoned to Sharpstown.

The new school will prepare students for college with an active role as global citizens. The rigorous curriculum will require students to take Advanced Placement courses and four years of foreign language, and complete an internship with an international focus to graduate.  Students will also participate in projects and trips that provide a worldwide perspective.  IHSS will prepare students to communicate, cooperate, and compete in the global marketplace by providing a curriculum that integrates international content across all subject areas.

This is a “school within a school”: located on the SHS campus but in separate buildings, students may participate in SHS activities including band, orchestra, ROTC, athletics, etc. but will have separate core classroom instruction.  9th Grade courses include English, Algebra or Geometry, World History or World Geography, IPC or Biology, Spanish or Chinese, BCIS and Fine Arts.  IHSS Principal, Chang Yu, comes from HSPVA and brings with him a philosophy of showering students with attention (with 20 students or less in each class, expect them to know your middle name!) in a sheltered and protected environment.

Mr. Yu has high expectations for his students in this college preparatory school program, promises personalization, infusion of international studies into the standard curriculum (students read not only the usual literature but also may read folk tales from Iran, China, etc.), learning inside and outside the classroom (with the chance to travel abroad-and the funding to do it), internships in business to make students more marketable, four years of foreign language study and technological savvy.

The school will open in August 2007 with 120 ninth-grade students, and will add grade levels in the following years (grades 9-12).  For more information, please call Principal Chang Yu at 713-721-7215, extension 344 or email at cyu@houstonisd.org.  Sharpstown High School is located at 7504 Bissonnet, Houston, TX 77074-5599.
