Sharpstown Middle School is committed to the development of relationships within the Sharpstown Middle School community to prepare students academically, emotionally, and culturally for high school. SMS is the home of the Magnet School for Architectural and Graphic Design. Students use technology to investigate the fundamentals of architectural and graphic design in this innovative Magnet program. Activities that develop communication and higher-level thinking skills highlight this exciting program. The school is divided into three learning communities: Vikadors, Thor’s Thunder, and the Warriors. Each community has a unique identity and students are competitive with those in the other communities. Safety and student learning are the top priorities at Sharpstown Middle School and the staff constantly seeks new and better ways to improve the learning of the students.
There are many new and exciting things happening at Sharpstown. The TAKS scores continue to go up. SMS is recognized in all areas of Reading, Writing, and Social Studies. School-wide goals focusing on Math and Science promise to help raise scores in those areas as SMS plans to become a Recognized school this year. The school has always had excellent sports teams and won district championships last year in football, basketball, volleyball, track, and soccer. The robotics team has taken city-wide awards for the past 2 years and the program continues to grow. New band, art, dance, and theater teachers promise fresh and exciting things happening in the fine arts and a new PreAP Spanish course will allow students to work for high school credits.
This year, Sharpstown Middle will offer a new after school program through partnerships with two outside organizations. The Citizen School program will focus on citizenship, grades, and working on the whole student while the Neighborhood Centers program will focus on entire families. Students will be able to register for these programs at the beginning of the year but space is limited in each.
Uniform shirts will be on sale during registration August 6 – 10. Only shirts purchased through the school are allowed. If your child is zoned to Sharpstown and is coming from one of the schools in the feeder pattern, you do not need to register, the registration occurs automatically.
New parent and student orientation will be Wednesday evening, August 15th @ 7 pm. Have a great summer, read with your kids, have them retell movies you see to help with summarization and sequencing, and most importantly, enjoy the time with your families.
