These centers also offer Summer Programs. Lansdale & Sharpstown Community Centers also have pools (open Memorial Day weekend-Labor Day, Tuesday-Sunday 1:00 PM-8:00 PM) & have "learn to swim" classes offered through the Red Cross. Volunteers needed for afterschool program at Sharpstown Middle School!
Citizen Schools is an innovative, national afterschool program that inspires and educates children while strengthening communities through unique learning apprenticeships. Through a national network of 30 + after-school program locations, Citizen Schools engages more than 2,000 students (ages 9-14) and 1,500 community volunteers annually. This year, Texas will have 6 programs - four in Houston and two in Austin. We are looking for volunteers (who we call "Citizen Teachers") to teach what they know and love to Houston middle schoolers.
Who: Anyone can be a Citizen Teacher - you just need to have a skill that you can share with young people. There are all sorts of apprenticeships and skills that are taught - for example, building solar cars, constructing bookshelves, learning about law and participating in a mock trial, designing websites, making a quilt, studying nutrition, writing poetry, or mapping a neighborhood.
What: Teach weekly, 90 minute lessons for 11 weeks at a Citizen Schools middle school campus in Houston.
When: Volunteer training begins at the end of August, and programming runs mid-September through mid-December.
How: Apply to be a volunteer with Citizen Schools by visiting www.citizenschools.org/volunteer or contacting Diana Clark at (713) 824-3377, DianaClark@citizenschools.org.
